Among the many Renaissance artists of Umbria, Tommaso di Cristoforo Fini, known as Masolino da Panicale (Panicale 1383 - Florence 1440) certainly merits mention.
Masolino, which in old Italian means “small of stature,” worked primarily in Florence, where he collaborated with Masaccio to paint the frescoes in the Cappella Brancacci (1424-1428). Later on he worked in Castiglione Olona, in the province of Varese, where, starting in 1435, he painted a fresco cycle for the Collegiata dedicated to saints Stefano and Lorenzo.
Only one of his works has been documented in Umbria and is located in his hometown of Panicale.
