Lake Trasimeno has been a source of inspiration for many an artist and the birthplace of others: embark upon a journey to discover the many great works of art and marvellous Umbrian towns they call home.
Itinerary dedicated to the Italian artist Anton Maria Garbi, who worked mostly in Umbria (Tuoro sul Trasimeno 1718 – Perugia 1797)
ISOLA MAGGIORE
Isola Maggiore can be reached by ferry from Tuoro, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Castiglione del Lago. It is the only one of the three islands still inhabited and is known for its Lace Museum and because St. Francis was there during Lent in 1211.
🟢 The 15th century neo-Baroque Chiesa del Buon Gesù here is home to the 18th century artist Antonio Maria Garbi’s work Jesus at the Temple. It is also where you can admire Giacomo Giorgetti’s Ascension of the Virgin and Saints.
FROM ISOLA MAGGIORE TO TUORO SUL TRASIMENO -BORGHETTO DI TUORO SUL TRASIMENO
After returning to the dock at Tuoro sul Trasimeno, Borghetto, a small lakeside village, is located a 10 min drive away.
🟢 In the local Church of San Martino you’ll see his painting of the Madonna of the Rose.
FROM BORGHETTO TO VERNAZZANO ALTO
Within the municipality of Tuoro, Vernazzano is built up on two levels: Vernazzano Basso where the residents live, and Vernazzano Alto, the ancient settlement.
🟢 In the Chiesa San Michele Arcangelo hangs a painting depicting a scene in which the Archangel Michael is about to stab the Demon, his foot firmly holding down the devil’s head. (1769).
FROM VERNAZZANO ALTO TO ASSISI
A 60 km drive takes you to Assisi, the birthplace of Saint Francis, the patron saint of Italy together with Saint Catherine of Siena.
🟢 In the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva is his painting portraying the Death of Sant’Andrea Avellino.
FROM ASSISI TO MONTEFALCO
Some 35 km away is Montefalco, famous for its production of prized wines like Sagrantino di Montefalco and Montefalco rosso.
🟢 In the museum of San Francesco you will find the artist’s Madonna Ascended (1735)
FROM MONTEFALCO TO DERUTA
About 33 km away if the town of Deruta, renowned for the ceramics that bear its name.
🟢 Here, in the Chiesa di Sant’Anna, is Garbi’s painting Madonna with Child, St. Anne, St. Gioacchino and St. Francis.
